BLACK-CHINNED SISKIN Carduelis barbata

BLACK-CHINNED SISKIN Carduelis barbata

  • Siskin-Vladislav-T-Jirousek

Resident and breeding in the Falklands. Black-chinned siskins are very small finches- about 6.5cm (2.5 inches) high. Males have a distinct black cap and a small black chin; they have olive green plumage on their back with yellow-green rumps and brownish-black wings and tail. Females’ plumage is similar but they are duller and lack the black cap and chin.
Diet is small seeds but they may take insect larvae as well.

Black-chinned siskins are confined to off-shore islands and settlements where trees have been introduced.
